Writing your own obituary is not a harbinger of bad things to come. You still have places to go and people to see! In fact, this exercise also offers you the opportunity to take stock of where you are in life, how you got there, and if you are on a path you always envisioned.

Writing it yourself and in advance ensures that you'll get all of the important details and express yourself with flair. So go ahead and start working on a draft of your obituary. Doing so is a golden opportunity to make a lasting impression on your family, while sharing your story with the world.

Ask for funds in a simple and respectful way: "I was wondering if you would be able to donate funds towards (insert deceased individual's name) funeral. Any amount would be appreciated if you choose to do so, and there's absolutely no pressure.

You can search most state archives online and easily access them from the comfort of your own home. These searches are also free. State archives often have death certificates that date to the founding of their state and beyond in some cases.

Some reasons to not go to a funeral include: You want to go, but the service is private. The service is out of town and travel would be difficult. You are sick or have a chronic condition that would make it difficult, impossible, or highly uncomfortable to attend.

This wording is often used to provide context to a death, even though it doesn't say anything about the circumstances. Many believe that this is coded language for an overdose or suicide, but this is not always the case.

While there is plenty of room for gentle white lies in obits, bigger lies are frowned upon. People don't like it when an obituary ignores a person's crimes, abuse or chronically poor behavior.
